Callers Complain of Background Noise

When I am using my iPhone 11 Pro Max during a call with the phone up to my ear (not on speakerphone), most callers comment on how much background noise they can hear on my end. For example, I was just in a completely quiet room with a window open. The only noticeable noise was a bird chirping, but it was mild - nothing extreme. The caller I was talking to asked if I was outside because he could hear the bird plain as day alongside me. Also, if my Apple Watch makes a notification noise when I'm on the phone, most callers ask, "What was that noise!" because it came through so loudly on their end.

Quality never seems to be an issue, but it's almost as if the microphone is too sensitive and amplifying everything. I do have "Phone Noise Cancellation" turned ON within Accessibility and I haven't noticed a difference with it turned OFF either.

I'm on AT&T and I do have Wi-Fi calling turned on for when I'm on Wi-Fi, however, if I was away from Wi-Fi, this issue seems to persist. Any suggestions or similar issues? Should I make a GeniusBar appointment and have the phone looked at?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I can confirm Phone Noise Cancellation is indeed turned ON. I am also operating on 14.7.1 and I know this issue was occurring prior to that update. I can’t pinpoint exactly when it began, but it has been occurring for some time. I can also confirm I’ve restarted the phone several times with no change.

I did some testing however. I have access to an iPhone XR and an iPhone 7 both also operating on AT&T. I used my living room and turned the TV volume up fairly loud. I had my Mom sit with my iPhone 11 Pro Max. I stepped outside and I called my iPhone 11 Pro Max from the iPhone XR and could hear my simulated “background noise” very clearly on my test call. When I switched the test around and gave my Mom the iPhone XR, stepped outside, and called it from my iPhone 11 Pro Max, the iPhone XR did not seem to pick up much of the TV background noise. The difference was very noticeable. I did the same two tests using the iPhone 7 as the “other phone” and it also did not pick up on the background noise. It’s almost as if the “Phone Noise Cancellation” on my iPhone 11 Pro Max doesn’t work or as if it’s constantly on speakerphone. That’s not the case, but my point is, the phone seems to pick up noise as if it’s on speakerphone when it’s actually up to my ear. Is it possible the phone isn’t detecting that it’s up to my ear and in turn not enabling “Phone Noise Cancelation?” … Thanks in advance for any additional tips. If I need to make a GeniusBar appointment to have the hardware checked, I definitely can.

Hello youngabe89,

Apple Support Communities is a great place for help! From the description you provide it sounds as though individuals aren’t noticing a difference in ambient noise when speaking with them whether Phone Noise Cancellation is enabled or not.

Do make sure that Phone Noise Cancellation is enabled in Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual. If you haven’t already restart your device to see if you notice a difference when on calls. You can find the steps for restarting in the following article.

Restart your iPhone

If you continue to have issues after restarting continue with updating iOS. Those steps can be found in the article below.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If those steps do not resolve the issue reaching out to Apple is the right next step. You can find their contact information via the Accessibility Support website.

Take care!
