This is my second Mac 24, and it's going back real soon, just like the first one.! I had to begin set up to install Big sur, because it doesn't come with big sur. Now I have to rest it and re-install the OS in order to start moving my file from my PC using the P{OS migrator.
You are not the first one to ask that question! After over 20 years of experience and assisting thousands to migrate experience it has proven WiFi should not be used because WiFI simply does not have the bandwidth to handle large volumes of data. You can try it if you want, however if you are migrating from a PC then consider useing the Ethernet solution Apple suggests in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204087
Your iMac shipped with Big Sur, all current iMacs do. After fully completing Setup Assistant, open System Preference and check for Big Sur Updates. It is also wise to check for update about 1x per month and install them.

When you attempt to download the correct version of Winblows Migration tool is gives you several versions to choose from and you can't decide until you see what version your new Mac is running so you have to go to setup to find out.
All the 24 inch iMacs come with Big Sur. It is the only OS that will run on it!

So then why does Apple sell them with instructions for Wi-Fi?
Better answer than the last one! My Student body were all on wi-fi and no issues!

Well that would indicate a networking issue on your side. Perhaps simply moving your data to an EHD would be easier and then you can import using that methi=od. When I made the switch many years ago, that is how I did it.
BTW, I get you are a bit frustatrated, I would be too if I was in your shoes. However, please dont take your frrustation out on the volunteers attempting to help you though.
Right now both my PC and Mac are plugged into the same hub and the Mac says unable to connect "Ensure both Macs are connected to the same network" both Macs!!! Even though I selected the windows PC and it shows my PC as the computer to transfer files from.
As for moving the old fashion way, I have been doing that for over 17 years and the only reason I decided to get the mac was so that I wouldn't have to waste my time and effort to do it the old way. It's why I returned the first Mac 24, no Ethernet connection that everyone said I needed to move the files. Looks like I'll be returning this one as well and stick with a pc.
Before you toss the towel in I'm sure its a technical issue on your end as Migration Assistant has worked for millions of switchers before you. I would suggest that you call AppleCare and get to a tech that can help on Migration Assistant problems. It is likely a setting or a step you are missing.

I just connected both via wireless and at least the Mac and the PC display the same code. Didn't happen while plugged in to the same Ethernet Hub. The aggravating thing is the fact that I am an IT professional with 17 plus years experience and I can't make this work!
Been there, done that . Had them connected to each other directly and was on with Apple care. They just read from a menu of standard questions and solved nothing. They want me to send them application logs from both computers, no thanks, I'll stay with the PC and return the second Mac, it's not ready for prime time.
You are clearly doing something wrong, please give AppleCare a call AppleCare contact Information. In adition when using Migration Assistant NEVER EVER use WiFi it will fail almost every time!!!
There may have been an update for macOS Big Sur, i.e. 11.5.1, but not an upgrade to macOS Big Sur.
All new M1 iMacs come with macOS Big Sur.

Wi-Fi works some of the time, however, it is slow and for large transfers it often fails.
