"Changes take effect after the next launch of Safari."
Did you delete the old jpgs & pngs in: /Users/beren/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Webpage Previews (quit Safari first)?
Thanks. I'll try deleting the cache and see if any more images get saved. I thought I had done that when I reset Safari.
Surprisingly, even though this was written for Safar 4, it worked for me on Safari 5.1
Open Terminal in OS X and type:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool NO
To restore Tabs on Top type:
defaults delete com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop
I use an awesome little utility app called Hazel. You can set it up to automatically delete files in folders based on any number of criteria. I created a rule so that every time Safari generates a webpage preview, Hazel comes behind and sweeps it into the trash. Works likes a charm. The app also deletes related files when you trash an app, a huge plus. Cheers.
The fix on Aug 2, 2010 by Arimatheia and the modification by Steko worked without a hitch on OS X 10.7.4, and speeded up Safari at the same time, Thanks!
Even better:
Clear your top sites, then lock the offending file in your Library:
~/Library/Safari/TopSites.plist
Mine looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>BannedURLStrings</key>
<array/>
<key>DisplayedSitesLastModified</key>
<date>2011-09-24T09:33:49Z</date>
<key>TopSites</key>
<array/>
</dict>
</plist>
