Spell check stopped working in Outlook.com on Safari

Greetings,

Yesterday the spell check feature mysteriously stopped working when I use Outlook.com through Safari. Only for Outlook - it is working on all other websites that I access through Safari. And the spell check on my Outlook.com works perfectly well when I log in on Chrome. I have gone through and through, to ensure all is turned on to spell check through both Safari and Outlook, and don't spot any inconsistencies. I have restarted the computer, no luck. All my software is updated, and I am working off a brand new iMac. Of course, the easy fix is just to use Outlook through Chrome, but I would really love to get to the bottom of this mystery. Can anyone help?

Thank you!

iMac 24″, macOS 11.3

Thanks to everyone on this trail. I've had the same issues for weeks and finally tried to figure it out. I tried the recent guidance.

It does appear to be a conflict between the OSX native spell checker and the relatively new MS Editor built into Outlook.office.com. Turning off the Editor function seems to work, as the OSX checker kicked in. There may be some variations based on OSX and Outlook.office versions.

However, the MS Editor is more functional on auto-correct, grammar, suggestions, and other enhanced functions. Hopefully Apple is working on enhancements to theirs or a fix.

HI

I have had this problem for 3 weeks now. No answers. I even tried the new safari developer version (Safari Technology Preview) but still no spell check in Outlook. My work around for now until Apple get their stuff together is the free version of the Grammerly extension. ( https://support.grammarly.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000091552-Install-the-Grammarly-browser-extension ) At least my work emails don't go out with spelling errors now.

cheers

Jon

I’m teleworking from home and my employers uses O365, which is convenient. But when safari disables the spellcheck somehow, I’m so embarrassed with some of my spelling errors, which makes me look unprofessional. My solution is to put the text into word every time prior to pasting into an email. What a pain.

It’s not a Microsoft issue, it’s safari.

I am having the exact same problem. Except that spell check also does not work in Outlook on Chrome or other browsers. At this point, even when I open the Safari browser spell check and manually go through each email, it is still glitching and not catching all errors. This is a huge problem since Outlook is my work account and not having spell check slows me down immensely. Hope someone can figure out how to fix this!

Concur. I have this issue: the inline spell checker worked fine in the Safari (13) web interface with outlook, then suddenly stopped functioning. Yes, I've checked edit/spelling and grammar/check spelling while typing, cycled it, restarted safari and the mac, no joy. This question is specifically about the "check spelling while typing" function, that oddly...is now working as I type this here on this page...but not on the outlook web interface.

I'm experiencing this same problem. Started a few days ago. Spell check and grammar check aren't working using Safari and outlook.office365.com. It works fine on other browsers. I'm using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) running 11.5.2 which updated last night, but this problem started before then. I've cleared the Safari cache, restarted the computer, still same problem.

It is my work account, as well, which creates a major problem. It has reduced my efficiency at work and is really quite stressful. I have also tried Outlook on other browsers besides Safari (I tried Chrome) and it does not matter. The spell check problem persists. I hope that this issue gets noticed and a support team begins working on a fix ASAP!!

Thank you Jon! So frustrating. Good to know it is Apple. A few months back there were issues with attachments in Outlook when using Safari, so it seems clear that the two will battle it out. I tried grammarly, but found it really drags when I am typing. I am using Chrome for Outlook these days, which still works for the spell check.

I was having this same issue on my iMac @ work

I turning off Microsoft's spell check and leaving Safari's on fixed the issue for me.

In Outlook for the Web, Click the gear in the upper right corner and choose "View All Outlook Settings"

Go to the "Mail" tab, then "Compose and reply"

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Microsoft Editor settings"

I turned off "Spelling" but left "Text predictions" on.

I read on another post where they needed to turn off "Grammar" as well.

My spell check is now working.
