Apple Watch series 6 auto detect workout.

How do you get the Apple Watch to auto detect a workout, I bought 2 x watches one fir me and one for my son and his one reminds him to start a workout after walking after around 5-10 minutes yet mine will not even after waking 3+ miles, checked all settings are the same on both watches and phones all notifications are on but still will not work.
