How does my friend’s location update without me checking it from the find my friends app? Does this person have to currently be on and using an app that tracks their location? Or can the app be in the background open in one of the tabs and it updates that way? Just was curious

Regardless "Find My" relies on GPS and the iPhone being connected to the Internet. The latter can either be by Wi-Fi or cellular data.
