iPad Pro crashing with SD Card Reader

My iPad Pro has recently started crashing when attempting to read an SD Card via the Lightning to SD card reader.

It had been working for quite a while (the past year), I’m unaware as to what changed. Automatic update perhaps?

The card reader and SD card read fine on my iPhone.

The iPad will “think” for a bit and then shut off and reboot. If I leave the SD card/reader attached the iPad continues this behavior.

I was able to get the iPad to read the card once during some attempts, but it eventually froze after about 5

minutes of browsing the contents of the SD card and then restarted. This resulted in corrupting the SD card and I had to reformat it.

since reformatting the issue still persists and only my iPhone can read the card successfully.

my old is now completely up to date and the only thing left (to my knowledge) is to try is an erase and restore from backup (not ideal for obvious reasons).

issue persists with multiple SD cards that previously worked with this iPad.
