Wrong name in iCloud when using AirDrop, etc.

Why does my wife's name show up on ALL of my devices when I'm using AirDrop / iCloud services? See below…

1) why does her name show up for ALL of my devices (MacBook Pro, iPhone, Mac Mini, etc)

2) WHERE can I make the change? Updating it on iCloud didn't seem to make a difference.

Any and all ideas welcome. Thanks in advance…

Hi Trent,

Thanks again for your follow up. Good to hear that you and your wife have your own Apple IDs. You might want to double check that you are both signed in to the correct Apple ID in your device settings. You can use the resource mentioned previously, Sign in with your Apple ID, to get steps. If for some reason you need to sign out of an Apple ID, be sure to read all the prompts carefully.

Hope that helps!

No … that doesn't work. I changed my name on my iPhone. My changed name shows up on my iPhone, but as far as AirDrop is concerned, the device is still in my wife's name. Changed my name back to what it should be … again, no change on AirDrop. I did receive two e-mail messages from <appleid@id.apple.com> indicating that my name had been changed (and changed again), but no change from the AirDrop perspective. Can't figure out why my brand new Mac Mini — completely clean, no files transferred from other Macs — shows up with her name. I figure it has to be a glitch somewhere in iCloud…

Yep. All devices are using the same Apple ID. All Contact files on the devices have my name as the "master" contact card. My wife has her own Apple ID. I'm logged in with my Apple ID (since that is the only profile on my devices); not sure how it is coming up with her name. One other anomaly — my avatar is the 16th century woodcut professor image — so my avatar image is showing up next to her name…

Hi Trent,

Thank you for your follow up. Are all devices signed in to the same Apple ID? "Check if the person you're sending to has their AirDrop set to receive from Contacts Only. If they do, and you’re in their Contacts, they need to have your Apple ID's email address or mobile number in your contact card for AirDrop to work."

It sounds like it's the Apple ID that is being used by AirDrop. It would be a good idea for you and your wife to each use your own Apple ID. Learn how to Sign in with your Apple ID here.

Cheers!

The devices Mac book pro / iPhone / Mac mini are signed in with same Apple ID and password on the same network , your wife iPhone is visible as find my iPhone is turned on Set up Find My on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac - Apple Support , the avatar image can be similar , if she had added the same image as in your iPhone ( it will show same image in appleid.apple.com ) , but the device name will be different .

She is changing first and last name of hers at appleid.apple.com ( clicking on edit and then changing and click on done to save an immediate mail appears in the signed Apple ID account in Mac that is in IMAP account ) .

Her Apple ID account credentials will be always different from yours including Apple ID and password , and security answers and questions , date of birth , rescue mail address and its password , if the account is set as secondary authentication .

While using air drop between devices , open air drop from spotlight , it will be prompt to connect blue tooth , click on drop down arrows , if it is selected for everyone so it will be visible in all devices , it depends upon you to choose the desired option .

Also find my Mac is enabled in Mac system preferences Set up Find My on Mac - Apple Support , so devices are located using location services Locate a device in Find My on Mac - Apple Support

To your question ( a ) she is first using air drop with the connecting devices , from her iPhone that's the reason her name is showing , regarding common avatar image it can be switched at iCloud.com Change your Apple ID profile picture on iCloud.com - Apple Support

On Mac Select your Apple ID picture on Mac - Apple Support

See a screen shot for drop .

For Mac system preferences , find my Mac .
