Sound Problems on iPhone 12

Before I switched to the iPhone 12, I could talk to my mom on our 6S iPhones while multitasking--doing dishes or making dinner, for example. She could hear every word I said, and I could hear every word she said. This is not the case now. Unless I am completely still, she misses things I'm saying, and the same is true when I'm trying to listen to her while she's multitasking. It is really annoying and makes me a less productive human being. Does anyone out there have a fix for this?

Hi. Thanks for responding!

It's for all calls--speaker phone, phone-to-ear, and using a corded earbud set. I have also tried taking it out of the case, but it still happens. It also happens to my mom, and it has happened when I'm talking to other people as well. My mom and I have the same case, as does my husband, who has not experienced this problem.

It APPEARS that noises from my tasks are interfering with/overriding my audio, which makes it sound like it's cutting out because it continues as long as I am engaging in any activity that produces noise.

I checked my settings, and "Phone Noise Cancellation" is toggled green.

I have an Invisible Shield on my phone, and it's the same glass shield brand that I have used on my previous phones.

Regarding my phone calls, I'm assuming they are cellular, but I have to admit that I haven't looked at the phone to check for that.

I would appreciate any help you can provide. We bought three new phones at one time--one for me, one for my mom, and one for my husband. He has not noted this issue with his, but all of them are iPhone 12s.

Hello DebVol,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're running into issues with using speaker phone. Is that correct? If not, are you using headphones for your calls? Are those headphones wired or Bluetooth?

When you say that you're not heard, do you mean that noises from your tasks are interfering with your audio, or that the audio is cutting out? If you go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual, do you have "Phone Noise Cancellation" enabled? Also, do you have a case or screen protector on your iPhone? If so, does this issue persist once they are removed?

Are your calls using cellular or Wi-Fi? Do you show you have a strong connection to the network (wi-fi or cellular) when you're on a call?

Best regards.

Hello DebVol,

Thanks for following up and providing those details. At this point, it's best to try the suggested actions from article, If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker and see if they help or at least assist in isolating the issue.

It's also a good idea to note if this happens in multiple locations, that way any environmental factors can be ruled out.

To verify if you're using Wi-Fi Calling, and test with this enabled and/or disabled go to Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling. You may also want to check and see if your settings include VoLTE in Settings > Cellular > Cellular and test if enabling or disabling that feature helps as well.

If you find the issue persists, it'd be a good idea to go ahead and contact Apple Support for additional guidance. You can reach them directly at Get Support.

Best wishes!
