No location found MacBook, Big Sur- OSX11.4

I have quoted the OS above, but Location Services hasn't worked for years and now I need it.

I have enabled Location Services in System Preferences.

The time is correct and set automatically.

I Have an Air, too, with the same problem but it's a clone of the MacBook anyway.

My watch, phone, and AirPods are all located.

Maps and System Prefs both have little grey arrows on them indicating supposed recent use of Location Services but Maps does not locate me on the screen.

It's been a long while since I did a clean reinstall . . .

TIA

This is the nature of a hotspot tethered Mac. I see no resolve here.

You can talk to your cell phone provider service if you want more clarification ...

I use my iPhone as a hotspot.

The iPhone readily shares locates itself, my Apple Watch, and my Airpods, but not the MacBook.

Just yesterday, though, when the Mac was connected to wifi in a local shopping centre while updating to 11.5.1, it located! So the nature of the wifi/USB/Bluetooth connection must be the issue.

It seems to me that when hot-spotted to the iPhone, either:

  • the MacBook is refusing, or ignoring, location statistics from the iPhone, or
  • the iPhone is not sharing its location details with the Mac.

I've reset the location 'Location and Privacy' settings in the phone to no avail.

Thanks in anticipation.

Geoff.
