Why does my wallet type cover (bought along with the phone from Apple) for my iPhone 12 pro max not sleep the phone when I flip the cover over the screen? On my previous 11 pro max the cover put the phone into sleep mode? Have Apple reduced the lock/unlock feature on all its iPhone 12 series
phones? therefore auto sleep/wake function will not work. WHY!

Is your iPhone going to sleep after that one minute or is it never going to sleep? Though we understand you may not be seeing the feature you expected, to lock and unlock by opening and closing the case, we want to be sure your iPhone is indeed sleeping as per its settings.
If it isn't sleeping ever, let's make sure of a couple things. First that we're working with iOS 14.7.1 and you can verify that in Settings > General > Software Update. If there is an update to install, be sure to create a backup first.

Thanks for confirming that your iPhone is sleeping. Additionally, as long as Raise to Wake is enabled, your device should be waking up when you pick the device up to open it as well.

The software is up to date. The phone goes to sleep after the 1 minute. Which is fine, I want it to go to sleep when I put the the flap over the screen, just like it did on my iPhone 11 Pro Max!
I have auto lock set at1 minute. The options are 30 seconds 1,2,3,4,5 minutes and never.

We understand that the case you purchased for your iPhone, one with a display cover, is not sleeping and waking your device as a similar case on previous iPhone models.
In Settings > Display & Brightness, what is the Auto-Lock set to? When there is a feature available to lock and unlock using a folio case, there is typically a setting in Settings > Display & Brightness to turn it on and off. Do you see anything in Settings for your iPhone 12 for that?
Also, if you purchased the wallet case from Apple’s website, that is not a feature the case describes. Here are the details on that case
