Invalid response when setting up ipad 7th gen.

I recently acquired an iPad (7th generation) only WiFi. It hasn’t been set up, or so I was told.

So I turned it on, it powered on showing the “Apple Logo, then went to the Hello screen, and to select your WiFi network.

After a minute or so a new screen comes on and at the top says:

“Configuring iPad”.

then about middle of the screen says:

“Profile Installation Failed

The SCEP Server returned an invalid response.”

so I thought, ok well I can just reset it to the factory defaults.

So I turned to Apple Support to set it up and in doing so followed the steps for setting up iPad using a windows PC.

everything went well, until I unplugged my device and turned it on.

IT DID THE EXACT SAME THING IT DID BEFORE, And as I described above.

can anyone tell me how to fix this in order to finish setting up my iPad?

Your “recently acquired” iPad is certainly not new/unused. It has most definitely been previously configured - and is centrally managed by a Corporate or Educational institution using an MDM (device management) platform.

The initial screen indications demonstrate that the iPad was attempting to contact a SCEP Server (using Simple Certificate Enrolment Protocol) prior to retrieving the associated device Configuration Profile to preconfigure and lock-down key elements of the iPad setup. This process failed as the iPad is not connected to the network upon which the required server resources are located.

To reuse and set-up your iPad, you will need the assistance of the System Administrator that enrolled the iPad for central device management. Unless you can prove that you are the original owner (which you are not), Apple will not provide assistance.

Your iPad clearly was not procured directly from Apple or an Apple Authorised Retailer - and must therefore have been sourced through the secondary market. If you purchased the iPad from a reputable source in good faith, you should return it for refund. Alternatively, if purchased from the owner or the system that preconfigured/enrolled the iPad onto its MDM platform, you might seek their assistance in properly removing the iPad from their management platform.

Until the enrolment has been removed, the iPad will be unusable.

Hello,

Thank you for your assistance.

I purchased the product from the schools bookstore as a used device, they were updating the department and had several for sale, and at the time I thought I was getting an excellent deal. I’ve tried asking for my money back but they said “all sales are final” and “devices are sold as is without guarantees”.

My only comfort coming out of this ordeal, I didn’t pay hundreds for it.

Thanks again for the advice, next time before I buy something so cheap I’ll try to remember, “you get what you pay for”!

M.S.
