Monitor Compatibility Question

Hello,

I am in the market for a monitor. I want to make sure my MacBook Pro 2018 is compatible with the monitor I am looking at. Here is the product name and its specs: GIGABYTE M27Q 27" 170Hz 1440P -KVM Gaming Monitor, 2560 x 1440 SS IPS Display, 0.5ms (MPRT) Response Time, 92% DCI-P3, HDR Ready, FreeSync Premium, 1x Display Port 1.2, 2x HDMI 2.0, 2x USB 3.0

I need it for grad school and want to hook it up to my Xbox One console as well. Can you help me determine this please?

Thank you,

Daniel Brennsteiner

You should try to connect using DisplayPort family cabling for trouble-free operation.

HDMI was invented for HD TV sets, and has trouble going higher.

The cables you want for HDMI-only Monitors (higher resolutions than 720p TV sets) are marked as Certified with an anti-counterfeiting tag and are labeled:

"Premium High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "with Ethernet"  --OR--

"Ultra High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "48G"

HDMI Cables with No Certification tags are good for your standard TV set, and not much more.

Let's start by looking at the technical specs for the 2018 MacBook Pro, specifically the external video supported:

Video Support

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at millions of colors and:

  • Up to two displays with 5120-by-2880 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors
  • Up to four displays with 4096-by-2304 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors

Thunderbolt 3 digital video output

  • Native DisplayPort output over USB‑C
  • VGA, HDMI, DVI, and Thunderbolt 2 output supported using adapters (sold separately)

So, as you can see, it can easily support the Gigabyte's 2560 x 1440 display resolution ... but not at that 170Hz frequency rate. It also can support either using DisplayPort or HDMI via any of its four Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports. Natively, via the former, and by using an adapter for the latter.

No one here can guarantee that this particular monitor will work. As such, be sure to review the store's return policy should it not and you have to return it. Good luck!
