I’ve been reading several articles that state that MacBooks do need antivirus software. Is this true?

Third party AV is not recommended— it typically does nothing but add issues to the macOS and competes directly with Apples own built in security:

macOS - Security - Apple https://www.apple.com/macos/security/

Apple Platform Security - Apple https://support.apple.com/guide/security/welcome/web

No it is not true. Do not install third party antivirus apps on your Mac. These apps interfere with built-in protection, use system resources while providing no benefit, and they may cause problems. The modern MacOS has built-in protection. Let the MacOS do its jo.
