double clicking the side button

ive just bought the new iphone 12 pro and am trying to use apple pay on it but when i click the side button twice, my phone just turns off. i have it turned on in apple pay settings.

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

i have double checked and it wasnt working but now ive tried fully removing the card and adding it again and i think it worked

Ensure that Apple Pay is set correctly and that you have added a Credit/Debit card.

Double check again by opening Settings ➔ Wallet & Apple Pay ➔ Double Click Side Button: Set this to ON.

If the above is set correctly and it still does not work when the Side Button is clicked twice then try double clicking a little faster than what you have been.
