Do subscriptions automatically renew or do they just expire?

The article How to cancel a subscription from Apple - Apple Support says, ""If you don’t see Cancel Subscription, then the subscription is already canceled and won't renew."

I don't think there's a fixed policy as to automatic expiration or not so you need to keep an eye on your subscriptions.
