Can’t answer incoming calls to AirPods by button on Apple Watch

What I got: iPhone, Apple Watch & AirPods. All connected via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi & LTE. When I got incoming calls - my Apple Watch shows me “Green” button (like my icon on phone). When I press them - the voice streaming out of my Apple Watch even I wear AirPods. What a crap? 2 weeks ago all incoming calls on Apple Watch (when I get wearing in AirPods) show me on big “Green” button my lovely earphones & I knew that after pressing on “Green” button I will hearing voice into my ear via AirPods!

Reboot all that I can. Get forgot all what I have & pair again. What the f**** is this? Apple is it You?

Hi guys,

I hope I can help someone out there regardless of the fact that I use SONY WH-1000XM4 BT-headphones instead of "ApplePods"; but do think perhaps that the source of the problem can be the same:

The symptom is that if I answer the incoming call with the green call button on my watch the call is not routed to the watch > headphones. I noticed that if I keep the call active, and click on the phone top left corner "call symbol" the call suddenly WAS routed to my headphones as expected. So I thought it had to do with some background app issues on the phone.

Today I experienced many weird issues with my BT-headphones and googled how to reset them. I held CUSTOM button + Power button in for 10 seconds while it was off, and connected to a power source. Then I did the same while off while NOT connected to a power source to delete any presets.

Then I paired them FIRST with my watch (Bluetooth), and then paired them with the phone.

My wife called just now, and guess what - I answered on my watch (green button) and the call was routed to my headphones. Seems like it is working now.

Perhaps this might be the same for any BT device? Try to completely reset them, and try to pair them FIRST to the watch and then to the phone. I don't know if that is how it is done with ApplePods but perhaps then I can help someone else out there with a different BT setup like me (Sony).

I suspect that the pairing order can "trigger the bug" in iOS. Apple will probably fix this later on if my theory is true.

Peace.

Did anyone get fix this connection issue? The only reason I bought the Airpods Pro was the seamless integration with my apple watch. ( as 1st gen Airpods). Now this is not the case anymore. I need to manually connect the airpods to the watch every time. The green “airpods” button on apple watch answering incoming call is not there anymore.

Everything is with latest sw (ios 15 / watchos 8, firmware 3E751) unpaired, reset, I did everything… but not working as expected. Very disappointed, Apple!

Same problem and I spent a long time with two different technical support folks from apple. Finally, they said must be something wrong with the AirPods and they sent me a new pair. New ones don't work either. Just called back apple and they have no idea even though there are 93 people on this site with the same problem. Very disappointing.

This is a huge issue for me. I use both AirPods Gen 2 and AirPod Pros. It started on my 10S Max and was the deciding reason I upgraded my iPhone since I wanted to hold out for the 14. Now I have the 13ProMax and it’s still an issue. I have a new M1 MBPro and iPad Pro so I figured I would make it to the 14. So disappointing. I spend a ton of my spare time in a boat and it’s extremely difficult to answer my phone any other way.

I decided about an hour a go to figure out the fix to find this thread. Unfortunately 90 people is not enough to get Apples attention. And the issue is likely for hundreds of thousands but it may not be big enough of an issue for them to reach out. Sucks…

I’m having the same problem and I’m so ******. When I’m listening to a book w AirPods and a call comes in, it used to be that I could answer my phone from the button on my watch and the call would go straight to my AirPods. Now if I answer the call from my watch, the call goes to my watch and whatever I’m listening to resumes. Today I was driving on a curvy road trying to navigate a call on my watch and a book in my ears while driving. It was dangerous. This is clearly a bug from recent update. I too have tried restarting all devices and have made sure I’m up to date on all the newest software. Wtf apple?! Fix it.

Same for me. Out for a run listening to a podcast on AirPods Pro. Receive a call and hit the button on my watch. Can’t hear the lady speaking, turns out she’s speaking through my phone.

Trying to fish my phone out of my pocket to pause the pod cast while trying to hear this lady on the watch whilst trying to keep my pace up on my run was not an easy bit of multi tasking.

Im kind of relieved to did it’s not just me. But why isn’t Apple responding to this thread at all?

Ah, yes, that kind of worked for a moment. But as soon as I take my AirPods out of my ears they disconnect.

ive got to then physically go into Bluetooth settings and click on them every time I want to use them. Whereas they just connect automatically with the phone.

so that kind of works as a workaround if I remember to do it before I go for a run, but it can’t be the way it’s supposed to work.

Have you actually the ol’ standard “reset and update software” fix before suggesting it as a fix? It does not work. Waste of digital paper and our time. C‘ mon… this isn’t the Microsoft forums.

So far no solution for me for AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, both connecting to apple iPhone 13 and Series 6 watch. I can switch to my AirPods Pro or Max after answering a call on my watch but the first few seconds of the call are either several seconds of silence or a bunch of “hello??” “Hello?” back and forth on my watch while I hit the … button and switch from watch to AirPods. What gives?? Seems a simple software update would fix this. Please, please implement it. I’m already on the verge of swearing off apple watches forever as it is the only apple device that makes me want to smash it on the regular.
