Can’t answer incoming calls to AirPods by button on Apple Watch

What I got: iPhone, Apple Watch & AirPods. All connected via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi & LTE. When I got incoming calls - my Apple Watch shows me “Green” button (like my icon on phone). When I press them - the voice streaming out of my Apple Watch even I wear AirPods. What a crap? 2 weeks ago all incoming calls on Apple Watch (when I get wearing in AirPods) show me on big “Green” button my lovely earphones & I knew that after pressing on “Green” button I will hearing voice into my ear via AirPods!

Reboot all that I can. Get forgot all what I have & pair again. What the f**** is this? Apple is it You?

Hi guys,

I hope I can help someone out there regardless of the fact that I use SONY WH-1000XM4 BT-headphones instead of "ApplePods"; but do think perhaps that the source of the problem can be the same:

The symptom is that if I answer the incoming call with the green call button on my watch the call is not routed to the watch > headphones. I noticed that if I keep the call active, and click on the phone top left corner "call symbol" the call suddenly WAS routed to my headphones as expected. So I thought it had to do with some background app issues on the phone.

Today I experienced many weird issues with my BT-headphones and googled how to reset them. I held CUSTOM button + Power button in for 10 seconds while it was off, and connected to a power source. Then I did the same while off while NOT connected to a power source to delete any presets.

Then I paired them FIRST with my watch (Bluetooth), and then paired them with the phone.

My wife called just now, and guess what - I answered on my watch (green button) and the call was routed to my headphones. Seems like it is working now.

Perhaps this might be the same for any BT device? Try to completely reset them, and try to pair them FIRST to the watch and then to the phone. I don't know if that is how it is done with ApplePods but perhaps then I can help someone else out there with a different BT setup like me (Sony).

I suspect that the pairing order can "trigger the bug" in iOS. Apple will probably fix this later on if my theory is true.

Peace.

This thread is closing in on 4 months with no response from Apple. Apple advertises these products primarily around their ease of use and intuitive connection behavior, and for years my watch, iPad, iPhone and AirPods Pro played nice together. No longer. When I receive a call on my Apple Watch it displays a green answer button with the icon for AirPods on it, when I tap to answer the call stays on the watch and the AirPods resume playing whatever I was listening to. For years these devices behaved intuitively and without my having to bumble around like I’m trying to install a mouse on Windows 95. Apple is losing its mojo. Steve Jobs never would have tolerated such mediocrity.

Same problem with watch, phone and AirPods Pro. I usually have dirty hands at work assembling machinery with AirPods in to deaden noise and listen to music. I also need them in to take support calls while still working. So I don’t want to (and didn’t used to have to) reach my grimy hands into my pocket to take a call with my phone.

But now, since Apple borked it, I muscle memory the answer button on the watch, but then my music turns back on in my ears. I get my pants filthy reaching for my phone so I can actually try to hear my customer (instead of the beyond weak speaker on the watch), all while music still going in my ears.

Their marketing is so slick teasing of the supposed “it just works.” A TikTok or something needs to go viral with someone knee-deep in brain surgery or something, fumbling with four pieces of Apple tech just trying to answer, and hear, a **** telephone call. So dumb. It used to be so simple.

Not sure what you’ve done (or not done), but it would be helpful if you could share, since I’ve tried everything that’s been posted so far to no avail…

Any help is much appreciated, given that Apple is just ignoring a major bug in one of their top selling points, or value proposition. I now cannot answer my calls because of this mess (Sao Paulo, Brazil is not known for being the safest place to pick up your USD 1500 mobile phone in the middle of the street). This is outrageous, in my not so humble opinion.

Apple, FIX THIS!!!!!

Nah, literally, I've done nothing to remedy this. It just happens to work now. Even today, my wife called me and I pressed the 'answer phone' icon on my Apple Watch and it flawlessly went straight to my AirPods.

Apple is a corporation run by humans who do not have the ability to make a perfect suite of products. No matter how hard they try, they will fail at perfection every time. Perhaps that is why they stopped saying, "It just works" years ago. Clearly, it does not just work.

It's a guarantee that they are seeing these messages and taking them into consideration but also getting some good, full-belly laughs out of them. They know full well that we won't stop purchasing their stuff. We're locked in. Your AirPods won't work with a Samsung phone. You will have wasted thousands of bucks on all your Apple TVs, iPads, iPhones, Homepod, Homekit compatible products if you try to leave their echo system.

But seriously Apple, please get a fix out for Apple Watch to Airpods for all users, not just me. We appreciate the workarounds from users, but work arounds don't last past updates. We need your Thinkquanauts (Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2) to get after this fix.
