My iPhone 11 Apple remote won’t recognize my Apple TV 3 device

I was given somebody’s Apple TV 3 device and I connected it to my Samsung tv via hdmi. The remote they gave me doesn’t seem to work, so I tried the remote feature on my iPhone 11, but it won’t find my Apple TV 3 device. It keeps searching. What should I do?

You may need a functional remote, to help set up the software remote. The software remote works over the home network, so the network settings have to be configured first.

It may be that it has lost its link to the box. Try re-establishing the link as described on If your Apple TV remote isn't working - Apple Support. Do both steps, to clear any previous link first.
