the "mail" application software
during an e mail it was unexpectedly lost. now I cannot use the e mail application called mail. how do get it back on Catalina

What do you mean by lost, lost from where?
Any app that comes installed with the OS cannot be deleted.
Do you just mean the Mail icon has gone from your Dock at the bottom of the screen.
If that is the case open your Applications folder and drag the icon for the Mail app into the Dock.
