iphone shutter sound

ever since i got a certified refurbished XR from best buy. if i don't want to take live photos there is no way of turning off the shutter sound. it doesn't matter what position the mute switch is on it will always make a sound ON MAX VOLUME.

Live photos don't work for me because HEVC is not great for cross compatibility

I have heard that some regions won't let you disable it such as the US but why could:

  • my old iphone 6
  • my mom's iphone 11 pro max
  • my cousins 12 mini and 12 pro
  • my other cousins SE (2016)

they can disable it no problem.

what especially scratches my head is that this act was passed in 2009 (before every iPhone listed above was made) so why can all the phone listed above disable it but my iphone XR which btw is older than half of the phones listed above can't

As its clearly a software lock is there a way of for example going to the apple store and they upload a version that doesn't have a lock as Canada has no laws that require a shutter sound?

I don't think iPhone bought from the US has this feature disabled. I have many of them and in all of them, the shutter sound can be turned off. I have bought an iPhone 12 Pro from the US in the month of March 2021 where the camera shutter sound can be turned off.

I have iPhone 4S iOS 9.3.6, iPhone 6 (India) iOS 12.5.4, iPhone SE iOS 14.7.1, iPhone 8 iOS 14.7.1 and an iPad Pro iPadOS 14.7.1 and iPhone 12 Pro iOS 14.7.1. Prior to that, I had iPhone 3GS, which I have stopped using because it is carrier-locked.

Look for the model number on your device.

There are many countries where putting camera shutters to silent is illegal (e.g. Japan)

Hence, if you have bought an iPhone from Japan or any of these countries, you cannot put it off, it has been designed specifically for a country that does not allow shutting off the sound.

What is the iPhone Model No/ MT0G2J/A ----> On your iPhone. Settings > General > About

"J" means it's made Japan

"X" means it's for Australia

"AB" means UAE

The other letter and digits in the model number may vary. as an e.g. MT0G2J/A
