Associating .webp files with apps

Have a problem with the new .webp image formats, by default they are only associated with Preview and I can't even assign any other defaults or even selections for them. If I right click on a .jpg or .png file I get a long list of apps I can select from but for the .webp files I only get Preview, even when web browsers like Safari and Firefox can also open them. The big problem is I can't even assign default apps for them, even if I use OpenWith -> Other and select the app I want these to be open by default and even checking 'Always open with' it only sets it for that one single file but any other .webp again only have Preview in their selection. How can I permanently associate a list of apps for these file types? Thank you!

I have the latest OS: 11.5.1

Yes, this worked, thank you. I was doing it the other way where I was selecting the default by right clicking and then 'Other' and trying to associate it from there but I guess that doesn't work. Using Get Info did work. Thank you all for the suggestions and additional information!

Apps are required to specific which document types they can open if they want to be listed in that context menu. I have a fairly long list of apps that can open webp files. However, Firefox and Safari aren't on the list because they don't have the appropriate metadata. Chrome is on the list.

The big problem is I can't even assign default apps for them, even if I use OpenWith -> Other and select the app I want these to be open by default and even checking 'Always open with' it only sets it for that one single file but any other .webp again only have Preview in their selection. Are you doing this via Finder > Get info on a webp file? I tried this and I can't reproduce what you are seeing. I can assign all webp files to Pixelmator Pro (for example) and any newly downloaded files open with Pixelmator Pro by default.

Maybe just try this again.
