When we load a Logic Pro x project from the other machine Logic hangs when we stop

When we load a Logic Pro x project from another Mac using exactly the same version of OSX and Logic Pro X we encounter Logic Pro not responding. The problem is solid and can be easily recreated, however the hang usually occurs when we stop playing the track not when we load it or start play it. We do not have any exotic plugins other than EZdrummer and Melodyne, which are also at exactly the same level.

Any ideas how we can resolve this problem as it makes collaboration between 2 Machines impossible.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Don,

Just wanted to get back to you and thank you for your help. Finally I found the problem. The hang was caused by using 2 different levels of EZDrummer plugins on the 2 machines. Once I had upgraded the older version the problem disappeared.

Best regards, Chris

HI,

Are you working with a project that is a "Folder" or "Package"?

How are you sharing the file? Transfer one computer to another, local server, NAS or using iCloud, Dropbox or some other cloud sharing solution?

If you are trying to use Dropbox, iCloud (or the like) you will have issues.

In general file sync solutions do not work well with multi file projects. I work on projects with artists in two countries and after lots of learning (and issues) here is how we do it.

We us Dropbox to share the files between computers.

  • Use the Local Dropbox folder for transfers and sync to between computers ( not web upload/download )

1) Computer (Sender): Save the project as a package with a version number. Note packages will get bloated since all audio files are included.

2) Computer (Sender): Copy and paste the package to local Dropbox folder. This will sync to the cloud and thus the Receiving Computer local Dropbox folder.

3) Receiving Computer: Copy and paste the package FROM the local Dropbox folder to a local working folder.

4) Open in Logic and save as a new Package and version #.

5) Test and work....

6) Copy and past the updated package to the Local Dropbox folder. This will sync to the First Computer.

7) Computer 1 go to step 3

Key points:

  • Copy and Paste not Drag and Drop
  • Never work in a shared/syncing folder
  • Keep the Dropbox clean. Delete Packages once received.
  • Bonus: With each computer having a copy on a local drive you have offsite backup redundancy.

Hope this helps

Hi Don,

Firstly, thank you for your swift response.

We are not using dropbox or any other cloud solution to share files.

We are using an external Seagate disk drive on which the original Logic Package was saved. We use the same external disk drive on the second machine to load the Logicx package containing the project.

In this manner we can load the logic file which does not trigger any errors . In fact we can usually play the song back on the second machine until we hit the enter bar to stop the playing, usually at that point in time Logic just hangs with the rainbow circle continually revolving. Via the activity monitor it would seem that Logic is not responding. We then need to force quit logic in order to restart. The strange thing is that logic only hangs on the 1 Mac Pro machine and only when processing files created on the second machine. When processing songs created on the 1st Mac Pro machine on the 2nd Mac Pro machine we have no problems.

Any ideas on how we can find out what is causing the problem?

Best regards, Chris

We are both on the most recent level of Big Sur and Logic and have the same level op plugins, only using Melodyne and EZdrummer as external plugins. Also these plugins are at exactly the same and most recent level of maintenance.

Hi Chris,

Normally working between systems is pretty reliable when using packages and everybody has the same versions.

It could be related to permissions on the external drive. Make sure that "Ignore Ownership of This Drive" is checked in the Get Info splash for the drive in question. Also make sure everybody has "Read and Write" on the drive.

Have you tried to Open the package and Immediately do a Save As ( package ) to a local internal drive. After that test with the local new copy. There could be permission issues with Package on the external drive.

Are you trying to play any Software Instruments that depend on MIDI when the issue happens?

What are the audio interfaces on each computer?

Hope this helps
