how to increase/decrease the size of email
photo attachments RECEIVED on iMac. it's so easy on my ipad/touch screen but surely there's the equivalent on iMac

O.K. I found that I could open with Preview by right clicking on the photo attached to the email, then file "open with preview" this gives me a new view of the pic with Markup commands above. I can define a rectangle, I can crop and I can adjust size by defining new new horiz and vert sizes which is painful. Is there a way of simply "stretching" the pic while maintaining ratio?
Open them in the Preview App (it is pre-installed on your computer) and then use Preview to reduce the file size.

You can increase the pixel dimensions of an image file with high end photo editing apps like Photoshop, Photoshop Elements for Mac or GraphicConverter. However, the resulting image sharpness will never be as good as the original image.
I wasn't able to try your solution out because:
It's so simple on the ipad. You just use two fingers to expand the photo. I would think that Apple would provide an equally simple method on the mac
Please define expand, your original post said to increase and decrease the size of an attachment. To me, that me that mean increase or decrease the file size. However I think you mean to expand the size of a photo.
That's right. Increase the size of the photo.
Not that I can know of. Of course you can call AppleCare and maybe they can give you a hand.
