Why is one of my contacts displayed at the top of my message app panel?

One of my contacts is displayed at the top center of the message app panel. Why? Deleting the contact only removed the contact’s name from the display. The phone number is now displayed and taping on it brings up my conversations with that contact. Why doesn’t this contact just appear in the list of conversations with all the rest?
