I'm the only owner and user of a MBP with Apple applications on it. I've created a Numbers spreadsheet and then attempted to save it in a specific folder in Finder. I was told I can't do that, but would have to go to Finder and save it to the Cloud, then move it over - I don't have permission!

Then, after doing that, I tried to open what just took me 2 hours to create for work. I'm told I don't have permission to open it. What is this all about please?

Hey there JayMiller3,

It sounds like you're unable to access a Numbers files as expected in macOS.

Just to confirm, is this a file being collaborated on using iCloud with other people?

Have you tried restarting your Mac to see if that helps?

Can you test the issue while in safe mode? Take a look at the steps listed below. Keep us updated.

Start up your Mac in safe mode

If you don’t have permission to use files on a Mac disk

I just noticed you are the same person who had this same problem in April. The link I posted was to your question. Is this the exact same file with the exact same problem and it never got straightened out?

How about going into System Preferences/Security&Privacy/Privacy and scrolling down to where you see Full Disk Access and then add Numbers to the list. I don't recall if MacOS 10 has these same settings as 11 does. Numbers is not on that list for me, but it is on the list of Files and Folders with access to removable volumes.

Someone in April posted the same error and the advice given was to reboot the computer. The person never reported back whether it worked or not so we don't know if that was the solution or not.

I am wondering where this advice you were following came from. Who or what told you you could not save a file to a specific folder on your hard drive? Who or what told you to go to Finder and move the file (the one you could not save) to iCloud? Who or what told you you do not have permission to move it to iCloud? At first I was assuming these were error messages from your computer but the wording you used in your post doesn't sound like the text used in error messages.

Thank you for helping in this.

The screenshot, above in this thread, is the error message to which I referred.

I'll send another screenshot, showing what I get when I attempt to follow suggested instructions on changing the permissions. Hopefully, as you can see, from the screenshot, when I go to Finder>Get Info>Permissions, I can only "read & write," which doesn't solve the permission issue.

In the drop down menu, "Make (me) the owner" is greyed-out and, thus, not available. If this could be made available, would this solve the problem?

By the way, I am the only person who uses the computer and these documents are not shared with anyone else.

Again, thank you.

The permissions you see are just like what I have. I don't think that is the problem. If you click the lock and put in your password it should let you make the change you were looking to make.

The preview image should not be a folder, it should be of a spreadsheet. That may be a clue. The size of the file (which I do not know) may be another clue. It should be upward of around 100KB.

I am not the best person to help you with this. I don't know the answer to the problem and I will bombard you with questions trying to figure out exactly what the chain of events were that got you to where you are now and a bunch of other questions in an attempt to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it, if it can be fixed.

Unless someone has a quick answer to the problem, and I hope someone does, it is likely you will spend more than the two hours it would take to just recreate the document. I recommend starting over but saving early, like right at the start, to make sure it saves correctly this time. If you continue to have the same problem, though, we'll be back to trying to figure it out.

This, Dave, is the second reply to your kind help in a few minutes time. I tried yet another way to open the Numbers spreadsheet as it's needed for my work today. I went to the file in Finder, and without opening it, did a "File>Get Info" click. It still will not open due to some "permissions" issue. I'm listed as "read and write." As you see, from this snapshot, the drop down menu is greyed out where I could make "me" the "owner."

I'm really in trouble if I can't open this file.

Thank you.

Dave_G1,

I don't understand anything about "safe mode" and wouldn't know what to do once I'm there.

Regarding permissions, I've done what the article, you sent, tells to do, but it doesn't reflect what is seen. Here's a snapshot of what is actually seen when I select the computer's disc, open "sharing & permissions." There is no "ignore" command. I'm unable to open my files in Numbers because I don't have "permission." I'm the sole user, the owner, the everything, but can't use it. Here's the snapshot of what it looks like.
