I called support and they had me power cycle. It came up and things are working. I am running high sierra 10.13.6. This is an older Mac and the support recommended I stay on this version. I’m going to get an external hard drive and back it up just in case something happens again. Thank you that was a good idea to call support

"It was connected to power and at 90% when this happened. I don’t think it’s a power problem. The top menu bar is gone so I can’t even click on the Apple icon do a shut down"

Some Other Thoughts:

So, if you are not having power issues, then try the following: [Hold Down: command + Tap: tab key] until you get to the Finder icon (smiley face). See if you are all set from here. Also, [Hold Down: command + Q] to instantaneously quit the application. Then, uninstall these. See if an uninstaller is required to uninstall these.

"MacBook Pro just stuck and can’t reboot: I am on East Coast and it’s getting late. How long does it take to update? Is there a way to tell it’s doing something"

Perform this During the Day:

Best to do is to perform this during the day. Also, place the computer in an open location (i.e. not in the corner) to avoid overheating. As for telling if the update is doing something, the progress bar will have increased.
