The middle row of letters keys on my MacBook don’t respond at all—letters a-l and the modifier keys in that row. Does this indicate any particular reason/cause of the problem or a likely solution? The other keys work fine. A non-Apple external keyboard is working for now, but it’s cumbersome, so I would like to fix the built-in keyboard.

Single keys, straight row, or diagonal row— all indicate a keyboard hardware failure.

Thank you very much kaz-k for the information. Unfortunately my MacBook Pro is too old to be covered by that program, but hopefully others who have keyboard problems will be helped by this info. I had not turned up that info in my search.
Thank you very much leroydouglas for the links to those informative pages. They will help me decide whether to pursue repair and refresh my memory so as to ensure proper backup.
