how do I get a new startup disk or add more GB to mine?

  1. If your MacBook Air is a mid-2017 or older, you can swap out the internal drive for a larger one.
  2. If your MacBook Air is a 2018 or newer, internal storage cannot be changed as it is soldered to the logic board.


With that said, if you fall into the first case, your best option is to get the proper internal drive here:

In either 1 or 2, you can purchase an external drive and move a large part of your personal data to it. There are gigabytes worth of your personal data that you do not need immediate access to and you can move that to the external drive and just plug in the drive as needed.


Another alternative for either case, is again purchase an external SSD of a larger size install macOS on it, migrate your data, and use it as your boot drive.
