Airplane mode and wi-fi on at the same time

Is it normal to have airplane mode and wi-fi on at the same time?

airplane mode why does airplane mode no longer turn off wifi? I see the airplane icon and the wifi icon is still there and data still goes through.

It is for me.

I have an iphone without a SIM card, I use it as an ipod.

If you don't want it on, turn it off.
