External Hard Drive for iPad Air

Hello,

I have an external hard drive for my Mac Air that I have a lot of graphics on. Can I use this same external hard drive with my new iPad Air if I get the adapter or do I need to get a new hard drive for just my iPad.

I would hate to buy the adapter and the external hard drive doesn't work on my new iPad.

Thanks
