Adding borders to photos

I want to be able to order prints with borders from several printing services; for instance, ordering an 11x16 image on a 12x18 piece of paper. Some of the services say that they can't add the border, but I can by using photo editing software to add the borders to the file I send to them for printing.

I've heard one can do that via the print module in Lightroom, but is there a way to do it in the Mac Photos application?

Thanks,

There is no easy way in photos.

You can copy the image to a pages document, after creating a page in there with the size you want to print on. Centering it is easy, because pages shows a line through the image when it is centred.

You'd then have to output form pages as a PDF. If your printer can print PDF files, that would be fine - or you could then convert back to jpg using preview.

Alternatively do a search for "photos borders" in the app store. There are numerous photos plugins. But they all charge money, and have vast ranges of alternative border styles which is pretty much over kill if you just want a simple white border.

You'll need a 3rd party image editor that can handle layers. The demo version of GraphicConverter is one. Create a blank 12 x 18 layer and add the 11 x 16 photo, size as desired and center.

Warning: some photofinisher's software ignore any white space around an image and size the image to fit the paper it's being printed on. So make sure the photofinisher you choose will not do that.
