My voice memos from over a year ago have completely disappeared from my iPhone (and some from within the last year). They are also not in my "recently deleted" folder, although there were plenty of memos there that I never deleted! I already tried D-back and was not successful. Why did this happen and what can I do about it? Thanks.

Since you are not seeing the voice memos in the recently deleted folder, are you low on iPhone storage?
You can follow the steps in How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to see if that may be contributing.

Storage is still quite ample (used just over 50% capacity). However, a couple months ago I had reached my storage capacity because I didn’t realize my podcasts weren’t set to routinely purge themselves. So, I fixed that setting and got 50% of my capacity back. Could VMs have been lost at that point? If so, can they be retrieved?
I’ll look into that. Can you tell me why this happened in the first place? I’m missing a chunk of about 4 years of VMs, and I don’t understand why there were some more recent ones in my “deleted” folder that I did not put there. Thanks.

It's hard to say exactly what could have happened to the voice memos.
This is one of the reasons that backups are so important for any information that have.

If the storage was the issue, the content should have come back quickly after there was enough free space.
You may need to restore a backup if you have one through the steps in Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup to get the voice memos back.
