Multiple screenshots...why does it capture the thumbnail of the previous screenshot?

Perhaps an edge-case but, nonetheless...an OS gaffe. When taking multiple screenshots...why does it capture the thumbnail of the previous screenshot?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.5

Press Command Shift 5. Uncheck "Show Floating Thumbnail" in the Options menu.
