backing up from old to new Mac

Can I use a old external drive to back up my new Mac or do I need to purchase a new external drive?

iMac 24″, macOS 11.4

You can use the old one but if you have any old TM backups with old OS you may want to store that one and get a new dedicated one for Big Sur which will automatically be formatted to APFS.
