Photo Dimensions switched in Photos library

Many of our photos in the Photo library have their aspect ratio switched. So what was height is now width and vice versa - resulting in a stretched image. This is an issue that happened for years now. I can use an external editor like photoshop to fix it, but that is very time consuming. Does anyone know of an action or automation to fix larger numbers of these (and I am talking several thousands)?

Good thinking, alas, no success.

This issue occurred/started at some point when transferring from one version of iPhoto to another, certainly before they renamed it "Photos". I can see that all the images also have to be rotated in some way. So it is combined with transferring/importing them as landscape when they should be portrait and vice versa. It must have interpreted the orientation of the camera incorrectly - usually it knows if the image was taken in which orientation. It's also is only an issue with cameras that are not iPhones.

Hey Tony, it's not just the thumbnail. They are still showing up stretched when opening in any edit mode. Some images offer "revert to original" but it doesn't not change anything obvious. I tried your suggestion to make a small adjustments in edit and then revert, but that still returned the same issue.

I know I can edit with Preview > adjust size > turn off "scale proportionally" > switch the dimensions by typing the opposite value > safe image and it shows up correctly in photos. But It only allows up to 10 images at a time and there is still a lot of manual work involved. I was also looking for an automator flow, but that only allows for scaling, not reversing dimensions.
