PRAM Reset Question...

Can the PRAM on newer Macs only be reset once per reboot/startup?

I used to hold down "command-option-p-r" for 3 or 4 startup chimes because I once read years ago that was the best way to get a good "zap" and make sure it totally cleared the PRAM. I had done that on many Macs for many years.

But just went to do it on my new 27-inch 2020 iMac and it only did it one time, then after the second startup chime proceeded to boot up normally.

Thought maybe a finger had slipped off a key, so I tried it a couple more times, but got the same thing every time. It only resets once, then boots to the login screen after the second startup chime, even if I keep holding the key combo.

Is this normal on newer Macs? Or could something be amiss on my new iMac?!

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely did them more frequently in the PPC days, and much less since Intel Macs, but every now and then for certain related issues it's worth a try.

I was having some Night Shift weirdness after my upgrade from Catalina to Big Sur and thought I'd dive it a try. Don't think it helped, but I like to try the quick and easy before I go full macOS reinstall.

I remember even on older Intel Macs being able to do it as many times as I wanted by keeping the key-combo held down, but again on my new iMac, it only does it one time then boots up after the second startup chime. I'm sure it's working because my screen brightness resets, but I was just wondering why it can only be done once.

Maybe it's a T2 chip thing? Or a secure boot thing? Just curious, it's not a pressing issue!

Thanks for the replies, guys!

den.thed,

I saw that support page and did notice that it said I can release the keys after the Apple logo appears and disappears for the second time. Like most I assume that means that is all that's needed, and again I'm sure it did reset. Again, I was more just curious because "in the old days" even though it said the same, there were many support people who told me to hold it down longer, for 3, 4 or 5 startup chimes to make sure you "got a good zap."

Thank you for your reply and the links though, I appreciate it!

Also, what do you mean by "Disable Night Shift" ? Like, permanently turn it off?
