HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Doesn't Work after BigSur Update 11.5

It won't connect via internet or USB.

It is not listed as an AirPrint compatible printer, even though the 8610 and the 8700 are. What gives? Why not the 8600??

What can I do?

HP doesn't have the driver or the firmware for this update.

Now instead of a printer I have a paperweight.

Help!

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.5

Hi,

To begin with, it may be a good idea to reset the printing system. Does the operating system offer a suitable driver to use?

If not, you may want to try the Dec 11, 2020 HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS (https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) package download from Apple. Look for something like the HP Officejet Pro 8600 version 4.1.1 driver mentioned in the Printer and scanner drivers for Mac - Apple Support article.

Before testing printer drivers, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files (documents, photos, et cetera). Software conflicts cannot be ruled out.

Thank you for this report. Good to hear that you can use your printer now. Both computer and printer manufacturers will have to look for ways to avoid similar situations in the future. It is really not acceptable that relatively limited operating system updates repeatedly lead to deactivated printers. It should not be impossible to program an update in a way that previously working printer drivers and settings are automatically restored, if necessary.

Update from what macOS.... this you do not specify...

The current macOS is 11.5.2

If it is listed as AirPrint printer, delete the existing printer in

> System Preferences> Printers & Scanners, and add it again, select AirPrint.

If you have continued issue:

The solution is to download this package which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:

If you can't find an updated driver for your printer give the open-source, free Gutenprint driver a try.

Also, as you had noticed, the OfficeJet Pro 8600 is not listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support (published June 01, 2021).

It may interest you that the following models appeared as supported AirPrint printers in an Apple article iOS: AirPrint 101 (HT4356, February 13, 2012):

HP Officejet Pro 8600A e-All-in-One Printer N911a

HP Officejet Pro 8600A Plus e-All-in-One N911g

HP Officejet Pro 8600A Premium e-All-in-One N911g

It is possible that these, now removed, models were compatible with an earlier AirPrint version only, and thus somehow limited.

Anyway, the Dec 11, 2020 package download mentioned in my first reply has been reported to work with a number of other HP printers even under macOS Big Sur, so you may want to test that (Apple released this package after the certificate issues October/November 2020).

Thank you all for your help.

It was the upgrade to the latest version of Big Sur (11.5) that messed things up.

Following your advice:

I reset the print systems.

I downloaded and installed HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS

I tried to add the printer but it only found the "fax" version and it wouldn't print.

I went to HP and downloaded their HP Smart program. I followed their instructions to install the printer.

Again it only found the fax version and wouldn't print.

I reset the printer to factory settings.

Instead of using my regular wifi through the extender in my office I chose the wifi for the downstairs with a much weaker signal -- one bar instead of five.

Everything set up instantly with the one-bar distant wifi instead of the good wifi in the room with the actual printer.

It worked fine with the office wifi until the update to Big Sur 11.5.

Now it works fine with the downstairs distant wifi.

Technology is beguiling. But at least now it works.

Thanks again!
