How do I enable 2 factor authentication if I don't have an Iphone?

I have an Apple account because I own a Mac Book, but I have no IPhone. I would like to enable 2FA on my Apple account, but Apple requires an IPhone for this. If Apple was serious about making our accounts more secure they'd enable 2FA via independent apps like Authy on Android. Why is this not possible?

Turn on two-factor authentication on your Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Apple ID.
  2. Click Password & Security under your name.
  3. Next to Two-Factor Authentication, click Turn On.

If you do, you will receive one time codes on your mac, if you don't have the mac available you can receive them by SMS.
