big sur wifi

Hi,

iMac Pro 2017, 3GHz 10 core, 128gb ram, lots of free HD space

Big Sur 11.4

I have two WiFi hotspots. One from Verizon, one from T-Mobile. Every other Mac in the house (MacBooks, iPads, phones) can connect to them and they work fine.

My iMac Pro worked fine, but now suddenly is asking me for the PW for these networks. When I put in the pw it thinks for a while and then the input pw window comes up again.

I’ve rebooted, reset the SMC, tried a test user, tried recovery mode, turned off all other devices, reset my hot spots, turned off all the auto-loading programs. No luck. I’ve tried deleting all the known WiFi networks from settings.

I took it to an Apple store where it connected with the Apple Store WiFi and their diagnostics said things were fine.

But I still can’t (and really need to) connect to my hotspots, so things aren’t fine. It worked last week, so something changed.

One thing that I can see (but don’t have a solid understanding of) is in SysPref > Network > WiFi > Advanced > TCP/IP

On my MBP the IPv4 (Using DHCP) and IPv6 (Automatically) are all filled in with numbers.

On the iMacPro all the fields are blank.

Any ideas of things to try?

Thank you for those additional details Steve56303.

Erase and reinstalling macOS wouldn’t e a recommended step at this time. We’re glad you had the opportunity to contact your wireless carriers and walk through troubleshooting with them. You also mentioned testing in an alternate user account on the Mac. Did you have the same issue in that alternate user account? If so, reaching out to Apple would be the right next step. You can find their contact information via the Get Support website.

If the issue only happens in your user account there is a possibility that Login Items may be contributing to this issue. You can find the steps for removing those items in the following article.

Change Users & Groups Login Items preferences on Mac

If you continue to have issues after those steps reaching out to Apple is the next step.

Take care!

Hello Steve56303,

It sounds as though you’re having issues connecting to the Personal Hotspots from T-Mobile and Verizon. You’ve come to a great place for help, and have walked through fantastic troubleshooting steps thus far as well.

When using the hotspots are they a Personal Hotspot on an iPhone, or separate devices that only provide the hotspot feature? If they’re separate devices have you contacted your carrier since having this issue? The reason we ask is with having completed the steps you have this is a good indication the issue may be related to the devices. Have you noticed if this issue started after upgrading macOS? If so, it’s possible there may be updates for the hotspots.

We look forward to those details!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

So the hotspots are separate devices. I've had them for months.

I've contacted the carriers. They correctly note that the hotspots work fine with all my other Apple devices (2xMBP, 2xiPad, several iPhones, an Android tablet). As well they used to work fine with my iMacPro, but now don't - you can see how they'd point the finger at the iMacPro as it is the only device where they don't work. I've checked and there are no hotspot updates. One of my MBP's is running 11.5, the iMacPro is 11.4, so I don't think it was related to an update, although I don't really know this - it might have updated on its own one evening.

I live in Rural, America and so don't have reasonable internet access. I think I'll just take it to someplace were I can get a wired connection and format the drive and start over.
