TIme Machine misreading external disk capacity
TIme Machine is reading all my external backup disks as being too full to back up to, yet 2 of those disks are completely empty. How do I resolve this, please?

It just occurred to me: Is this saying the backup can't happen because my hard drive is nearly full? That doesn't make sense to me.
Time Machine on APFS creates a snapshot and copies that to the backup drive.
It has to create the snapshot on the source drive.
Snapshots are very small, but they do take up some space.
You may have to move some stuff to an external (or delete some things) before you can back up.
Hi Barney,
Thank you for your reply. This is the message I get: "Time Machine could not back up the disk “Macintosh HD - Data” because it is nearly full. Delete some files on this disk and try again."
The disk I am trying to back up to is empty.

Thank you, Barney. Dumped some stuff from HD & attempting b/u now. It's progressed further than it has since this problem started, so I'm hopeful. I'll follow-up when it plays out to let you know if your kind help solved my problem, or what happened. It'll be awhile. It's a first-time b/u of my entire HD onto this disk.
What is the exact message you get?
There is a message referring to not being able to make a snapshot because of space available, but that is referring to the source, not the destination.
Back-up successful, Barney. Thank you so much!
