I do not have enough space to update my mac and I do not have enough space for any recent photos to go from my iPhone directly to my computer either. I was trying to save them to a USB but can not seem to figure that out?
MacBook Air (2020 or later)
Buy an external drive (HD or SSD) that you can connect to your MacBook and use to offload your photos. This will allow you to free up the space on the internal drive so that you can sync you iPhone properly and keep your system up to date.

Optionally, you might take advantage of iCloud storage.

Because the typical Photos library is very large - many dozens of GB - you need a USB drive with the capacity for this exercise.
