The Apple Dictionary, Version 2.3.0 (268), (latest MacMimi- M1, ver11.4), breaks apart the looked up word, removing a personal work flow.

As a bad speller, I have used the looked-up-word: To double click on the looked-up-word, to get it's correct spelling, and then copy-paste inside another ap... The updates prevent this because copy-paste collects all the word breaks and pastes the form as-is.

Computers should help us with spelling and with speed, but Big Sur has suddenly compromised the bad speller. necessitaing extra steps, and slowing down an important work flow. My work around is to click on the British English button, and finally the plain word is revealed, instead of a Brocken up version of the word.

Has anyone found a better way to get the American English definition with plainly written words? (without break-in up words).

Work around for this bug: Drop U.S. American English lower in the list)

I refer to Apple's default dictionary, which I have used many years in earlier Mac OSX, without "a dot problem".

Oxford stand-alone-app is also excellent but omits the Thesaurus, and it is this "dot bug" which was wrapped into Big Sur + M1chip.

British and US definitions were generally identical, the few times I checked.

Maybe you are trying too hard. There should be a sidebar on the left hand side with all the matches from your search. If you click on the correct word, it should display the definition. I think if you just copy at that point, without selecting any other text, you’ll get the word. I’m on my iPad right now so I can’t confirm this, but I’m pretty sure.

Double-clicking on any word allows it to be copied. After copying a word we paste it elsewhere, except in this Apple Dictionary, Version 2.3.0 (268), (latest MacMimi- M1, ver11.4), the looked up word is Brocken apart by dots, removing a personal work flow:

Normally clicking once on a dictionary word and holding for a moment, will result with word itself being looked up. Good, because now that same word is automatically pasted in the top, right hand entry field; and it is pre-selected, which allows a quick Copy command. Thereafter the word can be pasted elsewhere, like inside another app and very quickly!

The new problem is the dots, which have no typical use outside the dictionary and inside the this new feature, they interfere with copy paste of the currently entered word.

Does that clarify the issue?

Image Below: Please note the dot between the 'n' and the c, within the word 'unclear'.

This dot is what I referred to. (Screen shot is from Apple Dictionary).
