IPad have to re-boot every time.

I have an iPad 5th gen and very time I switch it on from cold I get the full screen and all my apps, but when I tap on any one of them nothing happens. The only solution is for me to re-boot my device and then things are okay and apps will open.

It’s not great problem just very frustrating having to do this every time I firstly switch on my device from cold.

I’m guessing it’s probably because my device is failing somehow after several years, but anyone have an idea why this is happening or a solution?

Thanks.

Two basic troubleshooting steps to perform (test your iPad after each attempt):

Try a "forced" restart of your iPad, using these instructions:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top (power) button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top (power) button. Only when the Apple logo appears (it might take 20-40 seconds), release that button (ignore all other screens that might appear).

If the issue persists, something could have gone wrong during the latest update procedure.

I would try to install a fresh copy of iPadOS. To do this, create a full backup of your iPad (1), then restore it to factory settings (you need a computer to perform this step) and, in the end, set it up as new (2).

When done, restore data from your previously made backup (3).

Follow the instructions provided in these support articles:

(2) Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings – Apple Support

(3) Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

Thanks so much for your advice.

The procedure you describe for a full reset is the one I currently have to use each time I switch on. Apologies if I didn’t make this clear in my post. This problem has persisted through many updates.

Never considered a full reset back to factor settings. Will give this a try.

Your advice is much appreciated.

Thanks again.
