I have a new WD My book and when I set up time machine for backups, it changes it to read only. Why? and how do I change it?

I have a new WD My Book (4T). I set up time machine to backup to it but time machine changes permissions to read only. Why does it do this and how do I change it?

if the drive has only big sur backups on it, it will be read only no matter what you do. if you format an empty drive as HFS+, once you assign it to TM it is automatically reformatted as read only APFS. this is by design and is the "new normal".

All new drives should be erased/formatted/initialized as new. This will guarantee any proprietary/third party software is removed, so you are standing on terra firma, to go forward.
