The wind direction is wrong in the weather app

The wind direction is telling me where the wind is coming from not the direction it’s blowing. Not a huge issue, and maybe it’s just my area, but i hate it

Hello Keitharaneo,

Thanks for reaching out through the Apple Support Communities about the wind direction indicator.

Is the correct wind direction usually displayed? If so, the issue may be with cellular data needing to be toggled on for The Weather app. This will allow cellular data to be used for the app and to find the weather of the location when you're not connected to Wi-Fi. Do this by going to Settings > Cellular > Weather, and make sure this is toggled on.

If you find that the correct wind direction is rarely ever displayed, make sure that you have location services turned on for The Weather app by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services, and change the Weather app to "Always".

Take care.

You do realize that wind directions change constantly, and that the location of the monitoring equipment can show different values at different locations, because wind direction is affected by nearby structures? So unless the reporting site is the same for the three different sources and the measurements are made at exactly the same time there will be differences.

I actually can’t believe I’m doing this, because I’m tired of repeating the same answer. But here is some additional detail, provided primarily for any future viewer who has the slightest doubt about the facts.

The original poster raised suspicions about two specific things left for us to assume. One was the home town involved, which I will assume is Murray, Utah since that’s in the one screenshot the original poster provided. The other is the two applications that conflict, since the screenshot only provides one (The Weather Channel).

So to conclusively wrap up this discussion, leaving no doubt the two sources (The Weather Channel, and Apple’s Weather app) show the same wind direction for Murray, Utah, here are two screenshots taken within a minute of each other showing the identical wind direction.

Case closed. Good night.

I will try to make it a little more clear. My issue isn’t meteorology now that you’ve illuminated so much for me. My issue is the consistency. The weather app on the iphone was reporting wind coming from sse, ok. I note this and then switch the app to safari and search for my area on weather.com where the wind is reported to be coming from the northwest. So in one app it’s telling me sse and in another app at the same time it says northwest. What is this meteorological phenomenon, since it’s obviously not a problem with the apps?
