printer message out of paper however it's not

I am trying to print from my Macbook Pro, it is up to date with the latest OS release and version. When I print from a PDF file using the print function under the file menu or print from Gmail, a dialog page displays with the document I want to print and options if I want to change them. I click the print button and then I receive an error message stating that the printer is out of paper, it's not. If I print from inside an apple application such as Numbers or Pages I have no problem. My printer is an HP Envy 7640 series. Is this a MAC or HP problem?

Hello, staaal! Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

We've reviewed your question and it looks like you are being some unexpected errors when using your HP printer. It's understandable that you'd want this resolved, so allow us to assist with that. As these issues are occurring only part of the time, we’d advise reaching out to HP directly to see if there are any settings that need to be altered to allow the printing to work as expected. We do see that your HP Envy 7640 e-All-in-One Printer series is supported for use with your Mac’s AirPrint function: About AirPrint.
