External USB webcam video/audio out of sync

I'm struggling on my High Sierra 2017 retina iMac 27 to get my new Sony ZV-1 camcorder to deliver synced audio and video via USB. To be fair, even the built-in FaceTime cam and mic are slightly out of sync but selecting the Sony cam and its mic as the input sources opens up a big can of worms as the audio comes in more than 1 second ahead of the video.

I've tried selecting different audio inputs (external USB lapel mic and the built-in iMac mic) but they don't improve things. The ZV-1 with its latest 2.01 firmware is definitely supposed to work directly via USB as a web cam without any additional software or hardware -- and indeed, I can force it to produce synced audio and video by selecting one of the alternative sound inputs and immediately switching back to the ZV-1 input. But I'm creating a lot of short 'selfie' talking head movies in Quicktime Player and when I complete one and start another, the video is lagging again. I would love to know why I can force it to work once though.

In my troubleshooting steps to try to normalise the USB stream, I tried the following (none of which helped):

1. Reboot computer

2. Reboot ZV-1

3. Clean my HD with both Disk First Aid and CleanMyMac

4. Logging in to my computer with a virgin test account

5. Trying two different USB cables

6. Trying two different USB ports

7. Switching to two alternative audio sources (internal iMac mic and external USB mic)

Would it be worth zapping P-RAM and/or resetting SMC?

Alternatively, am I overloading the USB port by feeding it 1920 x 1080 video at 30fps? It looks great, plays smoothly and only lacks one thing...

Grateful for any help. I can't find any other similar complaints about this camera so I assume the problem is in my setup - which is very basic as I don't have any external MIDI devices.

Thanks, I do have EtreCheck but based on the reply just in from Sony, I don't think it will help:

Thank you for your recent email.

With reference to your enquiry, kindly note that the lack of compatibility of Mac operating system with the camera's software can cause the out of sync issue.

Therefore, we recommend trying another Mac that has on of the supported operating systems and let us know your outcome.

Regarding your enquiry to roll back to the previous software version, we would like to explain that, unfortunately, it is not possible to do this.

Should you have any further questions, please feel free to reply to this e-mail.

Thank you for your enquiry,

Yours sincerely,

I'm shocked that their v2.0 firmware for this camera WAS compatible with Mac Os 10.13 but that the incremental 2.01 bug fix update which was posted soon after was not.

v2.01 fixed one small bug and I wonder how many High Sierra users rushed to get it without even thinking to check if it would break the chain with their Mac?

Part of the problem may be CleanMyMac. Please read the following:

The best antivirus, cleaning app, and overall maintenance app for Mac OS is Mac OS itself. All you need to do with Mac OS to keep it secure and running well is to keep it up-to-date and do periodic (about 1x per week) restarts. Other than that, leave it alone. Adding third party antivirus, cleaning, security and other types of maintenance apps to Mac OS adds no additional level of security. The only thing these apps do is have the opposite affect users want. They make Mac OS slow, unstable, generate odd behavior (much like you are experiencing) and make Mac OS appear buggy.

Please locate the developers uninstall instructions for CleanMyMac and follow to the letter. Then restart in Safe Mode per the directions in Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac and then restart normally.

After doing the above, please retest.

Thank you. But even if you are right, I have already logged into my iMac as a virgin test user where CleanMyMac wasn't active - but the sync problem was still there.

(That said, apart from being a convenient way to uninstall third party apps, CleanMyMac isn't of great use to me albeit it has been around a long time and should not be causing problems...)
