Trash is empty in the Terminal but contains files in the Finder?

I cannot see any files in the Trash folder through my terminal.

  1. Create test.txt in desktop
  2. Drag and drop test.txt from the Desktop to the Trash icon in the dock
  3. Open trash and verify that test.txt is inside (it is)
  4. Try to find file using the terminal

ls -al ~/.Trash
drwxr-xr-x 2 username staff 64B Aug 25 09:34 ./
drwxr-xr-x+ 29 username staff 928B Aug 25 09:35 ../

I have already tried changing the Trash permissions. Is the Trash icon not pointing to the ~/.Trash folder? I can see the file when I open the Trash through the Finder, but I cannot see it through the terminal. What is going on and where did my file go?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.3

1. The Trash icon in the Dock is a combination of ~/.Trash/ and /Volumes/*/.Trashes/$UID/.

2. Select the file in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu. Alternatively, drag the file itself into the Terminal window.
