One would have thought it would be fairly simple to change one's voicemail message. I am finding it impossible. It says press the phone on the home screen and then tap voicemail yet all it does then is ring voicemail! Exasperated

When you tap the Phone App, the tap voicemail, do you not see Greeting in the upper left hand corner of the voicemail screen?
If you do, tap Greeting > Tap Custom > Record a new greeting and tap Save
OK....then you need to contact your cellular carrier. Voicemail is a service they provide.
True, one would think something as basic as a voicemail greeting would be simple, but then since voicemail is from the carrier side of the equation, and every carrier may have differing rules for voicemail, it makes it a tad more complex. I'm sure your carrier can get your on the right path though.

No unfortunately I don't. In the top LH corner it says "Voicemail" and in the middle of the screen in a smallish rectangular box it says "Call Voicemail"

through to voicemail press star. Then follow options. Then you should be able
to change you recorded message straight away. "
I'd never have found that out in 100 years and all the googling I've done never came up with it!
Glad you got it sorted. This is why you needed your carriers guidance. This is how O2 handles this. But many others don't.
Why is it so difficult to do a simple thing on my iphone like change the voicemail message. It is so frustrating
